Collections Stabilization Kit

A practical first step toward disaster readiness for libraries and archives.

Water-related incidents (leaks, pipe failures, sprinkler discharge, or storms) can quickly threaten collections.

The first few hours after an event are critical.

Collections Stabilization Kits provide institutions with the basic tools needed to begin early stabilization safely and effectively after a building has been declared safe for entry.

What the Kit Is

The Collections Stabilization Kit is a ready-to-deploy supply kit designed to support initial collections stabilization after a water-related incident.

It helps staff:

  • stabilize wet and damp materials

  • organize a controlled response

  • begin documentation and tracking

  • slow further deterioration

The kit is intended for use after a facility has been cleared for entry by facilities staff or first responders. It is not a substitute for professional conservation or recovery services, but it supports the critical period before those services are engaged.

What’s Included

Each kit contains a curated set of materials commonly used during early collections recovery efforts.

Materials are organized in stack-able bins for long-term storage and rapid deployment.

Stabilization & Drying Supplies

  • blotter paper and absorbent materials

  • newsprint for interleaving

  • plastic sheeting for isolation

  • drying line materials

  • PIG® absorbent mats for water control

Handling & Transport

  • vented crates for wet materials

  • buckets for water management and transport

  • storage bins for organized deployment

Safety & PPE

  • nitrile gloves and leather utility gloves

  • masks and safety goggles

Documentation & Organization

  • clipboards and log sheets

  • labels and markers for tracking materials

Environmental Monitoring

  • digital hygrometer

How the Kit Is Used

Once a building has been confirmed safe, staff can use the kit to begin early stabilization activities.

These actions help reduce damage and support informed decision-making during recovery.

  • separating wet materials from unaffected collections

  • interleaving books and documents with absorbent paper

  • setting up temporary air-drying areas

  • managing small amounts of standing water

  • organizing materials for controlled drying

  • documenting affected items and actions taken

A Foundation for Broader Preparedness

Preparedness Works supports libraries, archives, and cultural institutions through preparedness planning, staff training, and collections stabilization guidance.

The Collections Stabilization Kit is most effective when paired with:

  • a written disaster response plan

  • staff training in collections recovery

  • preparedness exercises

  • coordination with facilities and external recovery vendors

Together, these elements form the foundation of a sustainable disaster preparedness program.
